Phronetic
International, Inc., a Canadian company, came from an idea of a 1995
published article for the Quality Function Deployment conference in
Novi, Michigan, USA by 20 yr training veteran Robin Yap, LLB (Law), MS
Computer Technology in Education, ABD (Organizational Management and
Leadership). Robin is an elected Director of the International Board for
Standards in Training, Performance, and Instruction (ibstpi.org) as well
as CompTIA CTT+ Advisory Council Vice-Chair (comptia.org) apart from
previous executive committee roles as American Society for Training and
Development New York City VP Membership and continues as an almost
decade long editor for International Mensa's Isolated Mensans Magazine.
Three metrics were developed for that article and were called, RHI®
(Robin's Happiness Index), Triple Triangle®, and X-Factoring®. All
models focused on organizational multi-stakeholder satisfaction and
operational efficiency specifically useful for training departments and
corporate universities. Retail and hospitality enterprises used the
models and an entrepreneurial coaching practise was built to work with
entrepreneurs in San Francisco, California, USA. One of the successful
businesses
(Cyberworld) was featured in Time Magazine (August 1997), Wall Street
Journal (September 1997), KTU-Mornings on 2 San Francisco Morning Shows
(1997-1998), and Warner Brothers movies (Fathers' Days with Robin
Williams and Billy Crystal, 1997) and television shows (Carlton Cuse's
Emmy nominated Nash Bridges with Don Johnson and Cheech Marin, 1996).
This in turn garnered a San Francisco Mayor's Honor for promoting local
businesses.
Training is central to enabling stellar performance from coached
businesses. The three models above were merged to become M3® (Matrix
Maximization Model) this was practised through training management and
consulting in New York City by the early 2000s.
Since training and entrepreneurial coaching are the catalysts of most
successful enterprises, it was important to build a practice that
focused on supporting, assisting, and developing programs to enable
sustainable stellar training performance by all parties of a training
event - managers, support staff, instructors, technologists, vendors,
contractors, and others. Thus, the development of the Phronetic
Entrepreneurial Coaching Model®.
The name "Phronetic" was born from the idea of Aristotle's [Nicomachean
Ethics' book] concept of
phronesis [the ability to think
about how and why we should act in order to change things especially to
change our lives for the better]. As any leader (business owner,
training directors, supervisors, etc) and their teams face constant
change and transitions to address the internet speed changes of their
businesses, it is important to be mindful of what and how these
transitions affect their stakeholders - people, partners, clients, etc,
while being aware of their bottom line. Unfortunately when perceived
opposing forces are at play, some forces are left unattended.
The foundation of all Phronetic International activities is the PECM a
model built with the scholar-practitioner in mind. Every member of the
team adopts: (a) a continuous learning model; (b) approach all projects
using scholar-practise methods; and (c) ensures evidence-based decision
making in all phases of the development of training support, research,
and entrepreneurial coaching activities.
